Hello, I’m JJ.

A practice
across a few
disciplines.

Designer, product manager, hands-on developer.
Curious about the parts in between.

I’m based in Charlottesville, Virginia. My work moves between product design, software, film, and physical spaces.

I spent more than thirteen years at Teachstone, from multimedia development through product management. I worked on educator experiences, account access, mobile products, analytics, integrations, and applied AI. Before that, I worked in film, interactive media, and immersive events with Squid and Beard and Filament Productions.

Today I work on client products and independent experiments. Sometimes that means an accounting workflow. Sometimes it means a voice interface, a temperature sensor, or a tool that solves a small recurring problem.

The material changes.

What stays with me is an interest in how people find their way through something: the circumstances around a task, the parts that connect, and the boundaries that matter. Interviews, prototypes, code, cameras, and physical controls are all ways of working on that question.

Why Bridges and Doors?

The title takes its cue from Georg Simmel’s Brücke und Tür. Connection and separation belong together. A boundary can protect a space and still leave someone free to cross it.

That feels useful in design, and in a portfolio. These projects don’t need to become the same thing to belong together. I’d rather give each one room, then leave a few thoughtful paths between them.
